Clubman Competition 2010 results! A surprise score in a discipline he likes the least helped Phil Green clinch the biggest clay club title of the year.

Warehouse factory manager Phil Green is Sporting Gun’s 2010 Clubman Champion, after being taken to a shoot-off with Keith Hall.

Phil beat more than 200 other hopefuls to lift the coveted silverware and top prize of a Winchester Top Cote Sporter at the Doveridge Sporting Club in Derbyshire.

Phil, who was introduced to clay shooting by a pal from his local pub 12 years ago, made it into the shoot-off with Keith thanks to a stunning 25 straight on the Down-the-Line layout – his first ever at the discipline!

“People told me I would never be able to make a big score at trap with a Sporter, so it’s nice to have proved them wrong” said Phil who represented Little Kibworth Gun Club.

The new champion, from Countesthorpe, Leicester, used a 30in Browning 425 multichoke throughout the competition staged as usual over 25 DTL, English Skeet and Sporting. He shoots once a fortnight at Kibworth.

“I usually manage to score 23 or 24 at Skeet. The 20 I shot on the Sporting course at Doveridge was down to luck – especially as I dropped four targets on just one stand. I was gobsmacked to shoot 25 on the trap because it’s a discipline I only shoot once a year” he said.

Commiserations must go to runner-up Keith who made a fight of it in the two-way shoot out but whose challenge eventually faded away.

At least he could console himself with the fact he walked away with some lovely prizes in the shape of a Winchester Sporter and Fiocchi cartridges.

Elsewhere there were massive smiles on the faces of Junior champ Jack Poulter, top Lady Lara Meynell and Veterans winner William Holt.

Each won a Winchester Select Sporter and 1.500 Fiocchi shells.

For 13 year-old Jack, representing Lowes Laine GC, the Clubman win crowned what has been a great summer on the clay shooting circuit – one that included runner-up position in the junior class at the English Open Skeet Championship.

Once again the annual Clubman attracted extremely generous sponsorship in the shape of Winchester Sporters from David Stapely, two top automatic traps from world-leaders, Promatic and great support from Graham Morris of Fiocchi cartridges.

This was Fiocchi’s first involvement with the Clubman and lots of competitors enjoyed shooting this top Italian brand for the first time, some with very impressive results – including Phil, our new champion.

Thanks to them and also our excellent hosts for the event – Sue, Clive and Sean Bramley of Doveridge. Once again the family did a brilliant job of running the shoot.

See you again next year!
