Competition ends on the 2009-01-06
ALWAYS wanted to experience a day’s driven game shooting but never had the opportunity or contacts to fulfil your dream? Then here’s your chance! Thanks to the generosity of David Nickerson we are taking 24 young shots aged between 12 and 18 years to his renowned Tathwell estate in Lincolnshire for their first taste of a driven day. David is both a well-known figure in the gun trade and a sportsman with a lifetime’s experience of game shooting. In fact his knowledge of shooting and guns led to him developing a best-selling range of affordable shotguns – the Lincoln. So how did he come to hand out such a golden invitation to so many youngsters? Nigel Winkle of Euroguns, Finningley, South Yorks and its proprietor, Steven Drage take up the story: “We recently asked David how youngsters could possibly hope to try game shooting if they didn’t have the connections or opportunity in the first place. Apart from a fortunate few it’s a situation most teenagers find themselves in. What we said must’ve hit a chord because David’s immediate reaction was ‘right, let’s do something about it then’, and here we are with everything in place for a shoot on January 28.” By splitting into 3 teams of 8 each of our competition winners will shoot two drives during the day. But the experience on offer is more than just the chance to swing a gun on high flying pheasants and pull the trigger – everyone will also discover what goes into making a driven day tick and the people involved in it. Guests will learn about the etiquette of a formal day and how everything is geared towards people enjoying a great social occasion in a safe, courteous, environment. David – with the help of a handpicked team of instructors from the British Association for Shooting and Conservation – will be at pains to ensure each guest knows how to handle a gun safely in the company of others and conduct him/herself properly both on the peg, and off it. Included in this will be advice on safe arcs of fire, how to pick a shootable bird and avoid ‘poaching’ those heading towards a neighbouring Gun. “This really is going to be a unique and enjoyable day out for all concerned,” said Nigel, “and I for one can’t wait for it to come around!” All you’ve got to do is answer the questions below. All correct answers will go into a hat and the first 24 to be drawn will receive an invitation to David’s Tathwell shoot.
