The first step is to register with the auction saleroom. You will need proof of identity before being issued a bidding 'paddle' (the thing you hold in the air with your unique number on).
» At most auction houses you can bid in the auction room, over the telephone (not a bad idea if you are the shy type), by leaving an absentee bid for the auctioneer to bid on your behalf (the item will be secured at the lowest possible price, up to your stated limit), or increasingly, over the internet (you need to register well in advance for this service).
» Ensure you have your licence with you. If you are buying a rifle, ensure the necessary permission to acquire is on your licence.
» Remember to take a case or slip to carry your new firearm home in, it’s surprising how often people forget this.
» Allow plenty of time for viewing. It’s a great day out. At most auctions, there will also be a wide variety of gun cases, cartridge magazines, cartridge boards and other interesting accessories.
