CLA Game Fair launch for BASC’s young shots appeal and GWCT to release best-practice woodland guide.
Two important initiatives will be launched at this week’s CLA Game Fair, which begins on Friday at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.
The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) will reveal details of its major new fundraising appeal, which aims to give a greater understanding of shooting sports and their role in the countryside to young people from all walks of life.
Director of communications Christopher Graffius said: “We already do a vast amount of work with young Shots, but now we want to fill in some of the gaps. A good example would be mentoring programmes — we must ensure that the child who wants to shoot, but doesn’t come from a shooting background, gets an opportunity to try it.”
Money from the appeal will also be used to help fund young Shots who aspire to become future élite British competitors, and to develop and promote BASC’s resources for schools and at Countryside Live events.
Meanwhile, the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) will launch Woodland Creation and Management for Pheasants, a new best practice guide on woodland management, in partnership with the Woodland Trust.
The GWCT says that the guide will boost the amount of native woodland in the UK by encouraging pheasant shooting, and will be invaluable for those keen to improve their knowledge.
For those seeking to establish their own woodland area, free tree saplings from the Woodland Trust will be given away to visitors to their stand.
Director of education, Ian Lindsay, said: “We believe that pheasant shooting offers one of the most important incentives for managing and planting key areas of small woodland across the country.”
