Historic wildfowling piece offered to shooting club following unsuccessful fundraising bid.

The Hull & East Riding Wildfowlers’ Association (H&ERWA) secretary Ken Arkley and wildfowling officer Dave Upton recently made the journey south from East Yorkshire to Cambridgeshire to collect the club’s latest acquisition — the famous double 8-bore wildfowling gun known as 'Roaring Emma', which the club has purchased from Shooting Times columnist John Humphreys.

This historic wildfowling piece was offered to the club following an unsuccessful attempt by the BASC to raise sufficient funds to purchase the gun on behalf of its affiliated wildfowling clubs.

The H&ERWA’s purchase was made possible thanks to a generous offer from one of the club’s members.

Arthur Hampton, a long-standing member, put up the funds on behalf of the club, enabling H&ERWA to become part of Roaring Emma’s history.

It is the club’s intention, in line with John Humphreys’ wishes, to ensure that Emma, built by Joseph Lang in around 1870, continues to be used regularly.

Arrangements will be put in place to enable interested fowlers from other clubs to have access to the gun, and her roar will soon be heard on the Humber marshes.
