I am 16 years old and have just moved to a bigger farm. I now want to train my first gundog but I don't know what breed to go for. Can you give me some advice, please?
Gundogs
PETER BLATCH says: From the three breeds you mention in your letter I think the Labrador would probably be the better choice here.
What you need for your first gundog is a laid back sort of dog with an easy-going temperament. With this in mind I suggest you get a bitch as these tend to be less highly strung or active as a dog.
The secret here is to pick a pup from a well known working strain with steady parents. To put your mind at rest ask to see both adult dogs before agreeing to buy one of their pups.
As with all gundog breeds the basic training requirements will need to be adhered to such as steadiness, obedience and retrieving to hand. Remember too, training the dog to a whistle is essential before taking it into the field and making sure it is steady to game and doesn't run in every time you fire a shot.
A selection of excellent training books for you to follow can be bought through magazines like Sporting Gun or, if you want to save money, borrowed from your local library.
