What can I use to raise the comb on my shotgun?

What can I use to raise the comb on my shotgun?

Having a gunsmith raise the comb on your shotgun is not an expensive job.

The comb on my shotgun is too low and a coach suggests I fit a rubber comb-raiser to address the problem when shooting. Trouble is the one he's lent me is unsightly. Is there anything else I can use?

The solution, of course, is to send your gun to a practical gunsmith and get him to raise the height of the comb by heating the stock with hot oil then clamping it and allowing the wood to cool at its new setting.

You will be pleased to know that this type of work is not at all expensive.

The trouble with rubber comb raisers is that their bulk can also affect the cast of the stock, putting your eye out of lateral alignment with the rib of the gun.

A much better temporary course of action is to build up the comb to the required height with strips of adhesive insulating tape.

Once you've found the ideal height, send the gun to a 'smith and have it altered permanently.
